Art becoming Design - Skateboards

When searching for examples of Art becoming design or Design becoming art.. I came across a website about The History of Skateboard Art. I had always been interested in skateboard culture, and had never really taken the time to think about some of the artists/designers who are contributing to the board.

The history of Skateboard Art goes back a long way, and in this book, not only is it a showcase of the art, but also an insight into what the artists were feeling while they were creating each piece.

There seems to be a niche market for people who are appreciators of the art/design on these boards, and don't use them for skateboarding, but to hang them on their walls for display. Not only are they pieces of art, but they are designed to convey some sort of message/emotion. The design approach seems to be that each company/label is distributing a series of boards that is designed to appeal to a specific group of people. It is because of this that people are realizing this design to be more than just a cool graphic on the bottom of a skateboard.
